Job Purpose: This is an opportunity to join one of Aston Martins most diverse Engineering departments. Responsible for the engineering and quality of all Special Project vehicles in the Start of Production phase. We are looking for an Engineer who is highly motivated, able to contain problems quickly and efficiently, identify root cause and countermeasures and prove them out and able to set standards for vehicle quality to be measured against. You will be expected to complete engineering releases and raise containments. Working closely with suppliers to identify process improvements and capability issues, you will play a key part in ensuring the quality of parts supplied to the production.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks:

Responsible for complete systems on all Special Projects in production. The successful applicant can expect to work across all these areas as workload dictates. A broad mechanical engineering back ground is required. The role has dual functionality with the engineer being responsible for both the engineering elements of the current car as well as Quality and Supplier management. In support to other departments Engineers need to practice a hands on, go look see approach by reviewing & questioning in order to improve part and process at supplier, incoming parts, assembly and Road test or Field Quality. Thinking outside the box to enable production to build vehicles is sometimes what is needed in this role.

Engineers must therefore be able to:

  • Containment – Quickly identify and implement effective and robust containments.
  • Problem resolution – Have a methodical approach to problem solving with an ability to react quickly to identify root cause. They must have experience in solving complex problems using either 8D, G8D, PPS and/or 6 Sigma leading to effective solutions.
  • Feedback – Feedback concerns at cross functional meetings reporting out to all levels including directors.
  • Concern management & Engineering change – Manage all open concerns taking the appropriate action to contain and then implement a robust, cost effective permanent corrective action (engineering change). This involves marking up drawings, liaising with suppliers, understand feasibility, cost, timing, stock obsolescence testing, running line trials and working with Manufacturing Engineering and Production to confirm build process and problem resolution.
  • DPV / RFT reduction – (Defects per vehicle / Right First Time) Provide engineering support to the production lines for containment and problem resolution of build issues caused by design, engineering, production or supplier quality issues.
  • Supplier support & investigations – Support investigations and requests for support by suppliers, both on and off site.
  • Travel – Be willing to travel if required for investigation including investigation of robust process and control at Suppliers, both within the UK and abroad.
  • Individual objectives – Manage their own objectives to ensure all KPIs and annual plan targets are met.

Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:

  • Degree level qualified or equivalent
  • Experience of practical problem solving (PPS / 8D / G8D / 6 Sigma)
  • Good general knowledge of the mechanical architecture of a vehicle
  • Working knowledge of a variety of component manufacturing process
  • Worked in OE or Tier 1 engineering, or manufacturing environment (CVE / PVT / Plant Quality / STA)
  • Experience of dealing with next tier suppliers
  • Have good communication skills, chair meetings and running effective meeting minutes / CCARs
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word & Powerpoint)
  • Understands CAD, technical drawings & drawing standards
  • Experience of working as part of cross functional teams
  • Full UK driving license

Preferred:

  • Experience of component design
  • Has experience in Failure Mode Avoidance (DFMEA/PFMEA/Drawing Study/Quality History)
  • Has used parts approval processes (PPAP/SPAP or equivalent) from early pre-drawing reviews to final parts approval including agreements for parts quality standards
  • Implemented engineering changes by release process including Bill of Materials updates
  • Made or used inspection standards (parts (PQS) / vehicle (VIS))
  • Experience in using Teamcentre & VIS mock-up
  • Experience in BOM (bill of materials) to determine part history
  • Punctual and can manage own time.
  • Flexible for both time and UK/overseas travel
