****Previous Rail experience essential**** Job Purpose: This individual will perform an integral role within the Internal Design Team, which provides design support to the business, both in terms of Temporary and Permanent Works Design.

Responsibilities:

  • The ability to query / challenge the brief, thus enabling the development of unambiguous working
  • drawings to a high standard of accuracy in an appropriate format, and to agreed timescales.
  • Review of H&S risk assessments and method statements.
  • Undertaking of Site walkovers.
  • Undertaking of preliminary risk assessments (Phase 1 desk studies).
  • Scoping, organising and supervision of ground investigations.
  • Preparation of factual and interpretive reports.
  • Geotechnical input into:
  • Foundation design and calculation of bearing pressures.
  • Slope stability analysis and defining remedial measures.
  • Settlement analysis.
  • Retaining wall design.
  • Production of clear, consistent, referenced calculations.
  • Geotechnical CRE on Network Rail schemes.
  • Provision of Geotechnical advice to the wider business.
  • Development and review of design / assessment spreadsheets and / or calculation templates for
  • use within the Internal Design Department with a view to increasing overall efficiency.
  • Design representative at Project and Progress meetings with Project Team, and / or the Client as
  • required. This may include providing outline design input at remit stage.
  • Full understanding of the team’s financial, quality and programme constraints.
  • Promotion of safe working practices in all areas.

Candidate Specifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Geotechnical Design and Engineering.
  • Experience of scoping, planning and specifying and supervising ground investigations to EC7 and
  • BS5930.
  • Strong report writing skills, with experience of preparing Geotechnical Interpretative Reports and
  • Geotechnical Design Reports.
  • Experience in Geotechnical Design, Specification and Implementation:
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, and Regulatory Body
  • standards.
  • Full working knowledge of industry relevant geotechnical design / assessment packages.
  • Foundations (shallow and piled), scour assessment & protection, retaining walls, slope
  • stability assessments and soil engineering / mechanics to EC7.
  • Understands the importance of achieving customer satisfaction by driving and maintaining the
  • highest level of standards and working collaboratively.
  • Has awareness and promotes SHEA (Safety, Health, Environment & Assurance) requirements.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the design process.
  • Working knowledge of the BIM philosophy.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Project management / organisational skills.
  • Problem solving and decision making in line with level of responsibility.
  • Pride and enthusiasm for work, and the ability to recognise and promote good practice.

Education/Professional Qualifications:

  • Degree level of education in geotechnical / geological science (or Civil Engineering & Geotechnics).
  • Incorporated / Chartered Member of a relevant Professional Body.

H&S Requirements:

  • Detailed understanding of current CDM Regulations.
  • Sound knowledge of Managing Geotechnical Risk.
  • PTS.
