Job Purpose: This role will be responsible for the support of the Database Infrastructure. In addition, the role will provide backup to the Windows Infrastructure Team.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This role is to be split between design, project work and BAU work to support the Database Infrastructure. The Database Infrastructure consists of several parts which make up the underlying architecture that many applications rely on to function. These applications include the Team centre/NX, DCS/VCS, Ease, Flags, any failure or disruption in any of these services could have a service impact which prevents other departments from doing their jobs as well as stop the manufacturing processes.
  • This is a role which will be part of a team responsible for ensuring the day to day management and maintenance of all Infrastructure System. Not only will the role provide the ongoing support to ‘keep the lights on’ it will also play a vital role in the planning and installation of new systems and services to meet the demands of new technology required by the business to support business critical projects.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Responsible for the Specification, procurement, build, deployment, management, software updates, security updates & decommissioning of Databases.
  • Responsible for the design and maintenance of the MS-SQL and Oracle databases
  • Manage the replacement of the Database estate as versions expire
  • Maintain the asset register for all databases, data owners and dependent applications
  • Ensure that all databases which hold Personal Identifying information meet the requirements of the Data Protect Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Support the migration of Access Databases into MS-SQL
  • Support report extraction using ZAP, Cognos and other reporting tools
  • Review software costs as appropriate and ensure that the Company is achieving the best deal possible
  • Define system storage and plan future storage requirements for the database system
  • Enrolling users and maintaining system security
  • Ensuring compliance with the Oracle and Microsoft license agreement
  • Controlling and monitoring user access to the database
  • Monitoring the performance of the database
  • Planning for backup and recovery of database information
  • Maintaining archived data on tape
  • Backing up and restoring the database
  • Adhere to internal Change Control Process
  • Document & maintain all job related internal methods & processes
  • Document and maintain all relevant training material
  • Ensure compatibility of any proposed third party packages
  • Assist/develop an ongoing Visualisation strategy which will support the Company’s present and future business needs
  • Provide input into departmental annual budget forecasting
  • Ensure that Database licence requirements are communicated


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Excellent working knowledge of MS-SQL databases at administration and configuration level
  • Excellent working knowledge of Oracle databases at administration and configuration level
  • MCSE Data Platform
  • MCSA Windows Server 2008/2012
  • Oracle Database Certified Professional
  • Perl, VB & Shell Scripting skills
  • Good project management skills and project planning experience
  • Bachelor Degree and/or extensive technical experience preferred
  • Excellent I.T and PC skills (Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio)
  • Experience in compiling in-depth technical documentation and user guides
  • Ability to web search internally/externally for relevant information
  • Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and telephone
