Job Purpose: The role exists to lead the Design and Development of core BIW archetypes, to include skin panels and bridging structure. The primary role is to line manage the core BIW team (currently 10 heads), develop the skills and knowledge base within your team, and be responsible for the full design specification and compatibility to all system attributes and performance targets. Develop new technologies to implement archetypes which deliver year on year savings of mass, investment and piece cost in line with departmental strategic plan.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Line manage BIW team – currently headcount of 10 engineers, designers and commodity leads made up of permanent members of staff and contractors.
  • Manage resource to ensure ability to support core archetype development and programme requirements for project engineers seconded during the concept phase.
  • Own and manage the creation of process and specification documents integral to the core BIW team and across Body Structures.
  • Set functional and performance targets for full system including Legislative, Safety, Electrical, Mechanical.
  • Deliver core archetypes to meet all functional targets and achieve year on year savings for mass, part count, piece cost & investment.
  • Act as technical point of escalation for issues relating to BIW through concept and applications phases, and ensure learning is filtered back into Core archetypes.
  • Own Failure Mode Avoidance activities and ensure that all risks are assessed through DFMEA / recurrence prevention activities and that plans are put in place to mitigate risk at the earliest opportunity.
  • Supervise assigned team members, giving technical direction and workload priorities. Run weekly team meeting for sub team and regular 1:1’s.
  • Ensure development of engineers within team through successful knowledge transfer and exposure to issue resolution across core, concept and applications teams.

Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:

  • Minimum Degree level in Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience within automotive industry, preferably with a broad range of experience, particularly within skin panel and composites design and delivery.
  • Experience in Body in White systems is essential.
  • Experience of working in high pressure pre-production and launch situations.
  • Experience of assigning tasks and prioritise to small team to meet deliverables.
  • Experience in introduction of new technologies essential
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Good ability to clearly present information to all levels in the organisation.
  • Knowledge and experience of Failure Mode Avoidance techniques.
  • The ideal candidate will be a focused, highly motivated, results orientated individual who works well under pressure and can work to a given deadline.
  • Able to lead team members with varying personalities and motivations in an effective manner.
  • Willingness to take overall responsibility for the delivery of all objectives assigned to BIW team.
  • Driving licence, Medical clearance to drive company vehicles.

 

Desirable:

  • Masters level qualification in automotive or management speciality advantageous (desirable)
  • Knowledge of NX an advantage
  • Knowledge of the AML MISSION process would be beneficial
  • Ability to develop and support growth of team members.
