An assignment is available for an experienced Civil/Structural Technician to work with a leading consultancy based in the London area.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Responsible for generating high quality, accurate and detailed records of civil and structural engineering project documentation, working within a multi-disciplinary design team.

Key objectives:

  • Lead responsibility for the quality and completeness of all drawn information for projects under their remit, including incoming and outgoing document control.
  • Manage other CAD technicians
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of junior staff, and the continual improvement of the CAD delivery processes within the department.
  • Promote and develop the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the department

Principal responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Be responsible for the production of schematic, general arrangement and detailed drawings in accordance with the relevant standards and procedures
  • Ensure quality of delivery when producing or updating CAD drawings to internal and/or customer standards.
  • Work closely with other members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
  • Communicate and collaborate with CAD technicians from other disciplines, other consultants, etc.
  • Provide support to CAD technicians, trainees and graduates in their professional development.
  • Provide technical mentoring to junior members of the CAD team
  • Promote and achieve excellent service through Perfect Delivery
  • Ensure thorough checking and accuracy of deliverables and record documentation in accordance with company QA procedures
  • Take lead responsibility for the registering and document control of all incoming information and outgoing deliverables.
  • Take lead responsibility for maintaining drawing records, such as check and record file copies
  • Provide feedback on the performance of the department from a technical and operational perspective
  • Develop positive relationships with customers through good professional conduct
  • Participate in knowledge sharing across team and locations
  • Attend and occasionally present in-house CAD courses and seminars
  • Keep up to date with design trends/competitor awareness /design techniques (BIM etc.)
  • Interact on project standards coordination with customers
  • Report to management team to ensure that resource requirements are utilised efficiently.
  • Excellent team ethic, and ability to work extended hours on occasions when required
  • Represent Company in external project technical meetings if required
  • Review specialist subcontractors/suppliers production drawings for technical compliance with design intent

Person Specification:

Qualifications and training:

  • HNC/ HND Civil Engineering accredited with ICE
  • Ideally Eng Tech TMICE, or working towards.
  • Eligible to pass criteria for security clearance and airside pass applications.
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Technical skills and experience:


  • High level of proficiency in the use of Microstation, Aecosim (Bentley Structural) and Projectwise.
  • AutoCAD 2D and 3D software. Working knowledge of Autodesk REVIT would be beneficial.
  • Significant CAD experience preferably in the Rail Sector.
  • Ability to produce 2D & 3D C&S deliverables from concept through to fully co-ordinated detailed design
  • Knowledge and experience of traditional building materials, e.g. Steel, Timber, Concrete and RC detailing, and overall site wide infrastructure and earthworks.
  • A keen eye for the detail of specific tasks, combined with an understanding of how such specifics fit in with the project as a whole
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Knowledge of current UK technical standards/publications and legislation requirements
  • Knowledge of standard details and solutions, and compliance.
  • High level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software i.e. word, excel, etc.

Team management:

  • Ability to work accurately and methodically under pressure and strict deadlines, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Excellent time and cost management skills to ensure cost effective and accurate delivery of all aspects of the CAD service
  • Effectively manage own time across multiple projects and prioritise workloads of CAD team members effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Managing drawing work for multiple structural projects or parts of larger projects to completion within budget.
  • Strong demonstrable communication style and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to influence and negotiate both internally and externally
  • Ability to work well within a team of other professionals (architects, service engineers etc) in delivering designs to satisfy the agreed brief
  • Track record of providing and managing a CAD service to customers
  • Supervision, Technical mentoring and staff development skills.
