Job Purpose: The purpose of this role is to create and deliver world-class designs supporting the CCO, CMO, CSO and Creative directors in delivering the values of the Company’s brand and business goals touching all areas of non-automotive design - CI, Merchandise, Brand extension, Team kit, Retail spaces, Brand Centres, Dealerships, Events, Motor shows and the Company’s Consulting As line manager to the designers you will lead and motivate the teams to deliver world class designs.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks:

The key responsibilities and tasks of the role include:
Line management:

  • To support the Creative Director and CCO in achieving the business goals and promoting the brand values: “For the Love of Beautiful”
  • Communicate brand values, brand purpose, design consistency and brand saliency requirements to the wider community.
  • Develop and lead a cross functional team to support the business in the creation of creative, visual or experiential assets in support of the core automotive business.
  • Support and encourage consistent use of Design “look and feel” and ToV across Regional initiatives
  • Developing a world class design team through effective people management and coaching. This includes: conducting mid-year and end of year appraisals (PAD’s) with permanent employees, conducting regular 1:1’s and ensuring the design team are demonstrating the key AML behaviours.
  • Work closely with HR to monitor time management, absence levels, performance, training needs and policies and procedures.
  • Support the Creative Director and CCO with the recruitment and induction of new hires.
  • Promote teamwork, cross-functional working and synergy between departments.

Technical Management:

  • Promote the intrinsic design values of the brand – Proportion, Stance and Surface.
  • Generate innovative 2D and 3D designs.
  • Research, identify and communicate the key attributes of the Company’s products.
  • Develop clear product strategies and communicate them fluently to senior management
  • Manage a range of projects including core programmes, licensee projects, motor shows and events, Dealer CI and future consumer environments, merchandise strategy and product creation, company consulting
  • Be actively involved in creating new designs and supervising the team to maintain themes and solutions.
  • Challenge conventional thinking and encourage an “outside the box” approach to designs.
  • Adopt visual and verbal communications to articulate designs to the wider business, partners, licensees and customers
  • Communicate with designers and CAD modellers to ensure surfaces are developed to design specifications.
  • Support the designers when they are required to adapt to changes made to the design briefs. Providing constructive feedback and an encouraging atmosphere.
  • Identify and benchmark relevant competitors, encouraging awareness of trends both within and outside of the automotive industry.
  • Support company gateways and Studio reviews.
  • Assist in maturing the chosen design theme model through to Engineering feasibility and job1 conclusion.
  • Ensure design projects are delivered with a QCD mind-set and, where relevant, within the framework of Mission.
  • The post holder will undertake other duties as may be required to achieve the Company’s objectives, commensurate with the grading of the post.

Qualifications & Experience:
The successful applicant will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Design related degree (preferably Automotive based)
  • Management experience with proven results.
  • Experience within a management/supervisory role within a Studio environment.
  • Must have an eye for detail and a proven record of delivering innovative designs through to project delivery.
  • Able to communicate with designers, engineers and Alias modellers to ensure surfaces are developed to design specifications.
  • Experience of working within a multi-functional team.
  • Extensive experience with a proven track record of results
  • The Design manager will have both exceptional managerial and design skills
  • Able to manage a team of designers, this involves: encouraging, motivating, coaching, mentoring and developing employees through HR mechanisms such as the PAD reviews and regular 1:1’s.
  • Must be able to deliver constructive criticism and challenge the status quo.
  • Able to produce world-class ideas through 2D and 3D designs.
  • Able to multi-task and manage a variety of projects at one time.
  • Portfolio of work demonstrating an artistic eye and mastery of design elements, such as colour, visual hierarchy and composition
