In a significant step forward for its energy strategy, the Netherlands has chosen Amentum to review and advise on technical feasibility studies for two new nuclear reactors. This move aligns with the Netherlands’ renewed commitment to nuclear power as a cornerstone of its climate and energy policy.
The decision to prioritise nuclear power began in December 2021 when the Dutch coalition government placed it at the core of its strategy to meet future energy demands. Preliminary plans aim for two new reactors, with capacities ranging between 1000 and 1650 MWe, to be operational by 2035. These reactors are expected to contribute approximately 9-13% of the country's electricity production, complementing renewable energy sources.
The existing Borssele nuclear power plant has been identified as the leading candidate site for these new reactors. Located in the southwest of the Netherlands, Borssele currently hosts a single 482 MWe pressurized water reactor, which has been in operation since 1973 and accounts for about 3% of the nation’s electricity.
To progress with its plans, the Dutch government awarded feasibility study contracts to reactor vendors Westinghouse, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and intends to add EDF to this roster. Amentum's role is to independently assess the technical and market viability of constructing two new nuclear plants. This includes reviewing the feasibility studies, evaluating reactor designs, and advising on financing and implementation strategies.
Amentum Senior Vice President Andy White highlighted the company's readiness to deliver:
This important contract advances our growth strategy by taking us into a new country and plays to many of our strengths. We are technology agnostic, so we are able to apply our experience of nuclear new-build programs in the UK, Poland, and the UAE to assess compatibility within the specific Dutch context.
To ensure a robust and comprehensive review, Amentum will collaborate with CMS Lawyers, PA Consulting, and ENCO nuclear consultants.
While the Netherlands currently relies on its sole operational nuclear reactor, the government is also exploring small modular reactors (SMRs) as part of its broader energy strategy. This initiative represents a significant shift toward diversification and sustainability in its energy mix.
Amentum has evolved rapidly since its inception in 2020 following the spin-off of AECOM's Management Services division. The company expanded further in 2023 with its merger with Jacobs Solutions Inc's Critical Mission Solutions and Cyber Intelligence businesses, solidifying its status as a global leader in advanced engineering and innovative technology solutions.
As the Netherlands gears up for its ambitious nuclear future, Amentum's expertise will play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s energy landscape.
