It was announced by Ford that its Bridgend plant was to close in 2020, leading to 1,700 job losses.

This spurred rumours that Ineos could take up the site to build its forthcoming Projekt Grenadier 4x4, a spiritual successor to the Land Rover Discovery.

Others have speculated that Ineos, owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, would build the car in Portugal instead.

However, there has been no final decision by Ineos Automotive to date on where Projekt Grenadier will be built.

The UK and Welsh governments are speaking to several companies about investing in the Bridgend site, the BBC reports.

There is a rich supply of skilled workers with automotive specialisms set to leave Ford and other factories in the UK, many of whom have come to Millbank's Automotive team looking for assistance.
