Potential Deal to Build INEOS Projekt Grenadier in Bridgend Factory ‘Very Advanced’
19 Aug 2019
A potential deal for INEOS Automotive to build the ‘Projekt Grenadier’ 4x4 in a factory adjacent to the imminently closing Ford factory in Bridgend, Wales, is ‘very advanced’, according to the Welsh government.
It was reported in June that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new Automotive manufacturing venture, which aims to embody the discontinued Land Rover Defender, could revive the closing Ford factory itself, but this scenario has since been ruled out.
According to INEOS, “The company has considered greenfield sites, former car plants and existing production lines that could be reconfigured for the new vehicle.”
If Projekt Grenadier is built in Wales, INEOS would aim to produce 25,000 cars a year from 2021, creating hundreds of jobs in the local area and many more in the supply chain.
It would also be a welcome boost to the UK’s automotive manufacturing industry. There is a rich supply of skilled workers with automotive specialisms set to leave Ford and other factories in the UK, many of whom have come to Millbank's Automotive team looking for assistance.
